I have noticed a pattern in my writing: I seem to only update when I feel the need is... overwhelming. And this generally means I only update once a month. According to experts, you should try to update weekly, but how do you update weekly and keep the writing fresh and good?
In other words: how do you fight Writer's Block on a weekly basis?
Sometimes the answer is quite simple: sit down and write. Laziness is a tough opponent, but so is Business. Finding the will and time to write is a delicate balance I have yet to achieve (though it's quite obvious). Another opponent (or so I'm told) is Fear. The fear of people seeing your writing can cause you to freeze. Fear of being rejected is quite bitter, and the fear of your writing being judged in the wrong way can be almost unbearable for a writer. The answer? Write anyway.
And yet, writing and writing well are two different ball parks. Anyone can write weekly, if they set their mind to it. But making sure the writing is perfect takes time... a lot of time. Time which people spend on important events and responsibilities. Finding the time is hard, especially if you are just starting out. How do you find time?
Make a schedule.
Going to a writer's convention has changed my outlook on writing. Wisdom comes from people who have experience, and writer's conventions are full of wise sages. This past convention taught me how to find time to write, and the first step is obvious: make a schedule. Second step: stick to your schedule. Third step: Find the "happy place" to write (no, literally. The office, bed room, library, park, or bath tub are great places to write in peace). The list goes on and on... but the most important step is always the first. Everyone knows the saying, "The journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step." So... start walking.
The best way to overcome Laziness and Fear is to write anyway. The schedule helps you with Business. The last problem the writer faces is lack of motivation. I have yet to find a cure for this, hence the updates only coming once a month... Passion helps me write, and it may be my only motivation at this point. Perhaps the best way to combat Lack of Motivation is to find Motivation. But the problem is this question: What is the motivation?
